After the occupation of Lwów (Lviv) by Soviet troops, the new authorities decided to liquidate the Ossolineum Library, the Ossolineum Publishing House and the Lubomirski Museum. The collections of the Ossolineum Library and other libraries in Lviv, as well as the nationalised private collections, became the collections of a department of the Library of the Academy of Sciences in Kiev. The collections of the Lubomirski Museum were distributed among other Lviv museums: the Picture Gallery, the Historical Museum (formerly named after John III) and the Museum of Arts and Crafts.
